You have been given the OK to reopen your practice but you have no idea where to even begin! With so many new regulations and changes in the industry due to COVID-19, you may be wondering: “How do I recall my employees to work?”
There is a lot of information to consider when it comes to recalling your staff.
What is a recall notice?
A recall notice states that the employee is expected to return to work on a specific day and will provide more information about what the situation in the workplace looks like now that they are returning to work.
What should be included in the recall notice?
The terms and requirements of the recall notices that you send out will be based on your provincial legislation and, of course, any policies and clauses that you have in your employment agreements or your employee handbooks. For instance, in Alberta, the employment standards code states that recall notices must be provided in writing, be served or delivered to the employee, and state that the employee must return to work within seven days of the day that the recall notices were served to the employee.
Having clear and constant communication with your team is going to be vitally important so employees are not surprised or unprepared when the recall notices are sent out, as they must return within seven days of receiving that notice. Other provinces however do not have the same rule. As always, just make sure that you are staying up to date with your provincial or state legislation as the regulations have been changing at a rapid pace over the past few months. Regardless of what your legislation states are the minimum requirements, it is still good practice, as with all things HR, to make sure that you have the adequate documentation to support the processes and the measures that you take within your practice.
This just one part of the equation when it comes to bring your team back.
You may have employees that decline the recall notice or may even tell you they don’t feel comfortable coming back to work. What if they can not find suitable arrangements for child care? What if you don't have enough work to bring everyone back? What if there was a COVID-19 exposure in the office? What do you do if that happens?
